2011 Season - The Magic Flute

Summer Opera Workshop in North Carolina

The American Singers' Opera Project, Inc. (ASOP) is a not-for-profit summer opera workshop located in North Carolina whose purpose is to educate American opera singers about what it takes to have a career in opera. Graduates of the ASOP program are now singing in Europe and at the New York City Opera.

In order to provide the kind of highly individualized training and personal attention that is necessary to nurture artistic growth, enrollment for our workshop is limited to 30 singers.

From May 28 to June 12, 2011, we will present a fully staged opera (Magic Flute) in English with piano and harpsichord as well as opera scenes and an aria evening on the prestigious Wake Forest University Campus in Winston Salem, NC. The opera scenes will be performed on June 4, 2011 at 7pm in the Admissions Theatre, the opera will be performed June 9, 10 and 11 at 7pm in the Admissions Theatre, and there will be two aria evenings on June 5th and 7th at 7pm in Brendle Recital Hall.

Master Classes and Presentations are offered during the workshop to all participants. In 2011 we will offer:

Presentation on Vocal Health by Leda Scearce of the Duke Voice Center:

Care of the Singing Voice: How to Make Your Voice Last a Lifetime. As vocal athletes, singers are at a high risk for developing voice problems. Operatic singers in particular need their voices to be optimally healthy to be successful in their singing careers. It is essential for singers to learn techniques and strategies for maximizing vocal stamina, longevity and wellness. This session will cover the basics of vocal anatomy and physiology for singing, common vocal injuries, how vocal injuries are evaluated and treated, and preventative voice care for singers.
